The Hickory Street or “Hollow” area was the location of many of Madison County’s early black owned businesses. Tolliver’s Cafe was relatively well known to both area residents and visitors, since the railroad men frequented it and talked of it when they traveled. Canton native and blues legend Elmore James frequently played here, as did other well known blues performers. Hickory Street has been designated as a site by the Mississippi Blues Trail Commission.
