McNeal School was a scheduled overnight stop for the Meredith March from Memphis, TN to Jackson, MS. Upon arrival of the marchers, law enforcement officers shot tear gas into the crowd of men, women, and children. Dr. Martin Luther King soon joined them, vowing there would be no violence or reaction from the marchers.
